Norton Barnhill, aged 72, departed this life peacefully on December 13, 2025. A man of exceptional talent, unwavering faith, and creative spirit, Norton led a life that inspired many both on and off the basketball court. He was a dedicated graduate of Washington State University, where he showcased his athletic talents as a member of the university’s basketball team. Norton was a professional basketball player who proudly represented the Seattle SuperSonics from 1976 to 1979. Later, he made history as the first international player for the renowned Atenas Córdoba basketball team in Argentina, where he played for several years and left a significant legacy in international sports.
Beyond his athletic achievements, Norton was a gifted artist, celebrated for his expressive paintings that brought beauty, reflection, and emotional depth to viewers. His artistic contributions earned him recognition and respect within the arts community. Above all, Norton was a man of strong faith in God. He expressed gratitude for his spiritual gifts and lived his life guided by his principles. His love for his children was profound, and he was a devoted father, mentor, and role model embodying perseverance and integrity.
Norton’s enduring legacy continues through his family, his art, his faith, and the many lives he touched across continents.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mario and Almeta Barnhill. He is lovingly survived by his children: Dana Barnhill of Barcelona, Spain; Nicole Barnhill of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Robin Barnhill of Winston-Salem, North Carolina (mother of Nicole); Raven Gause of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; and Norton G. Barnhill Jr. of Miami, Florida. He is also survived by his grandchildren Delfina Chiatti and Rozlyn Carter, his brother Al Barnhill, and his nieces Carla Crudup and Niki Moffett.
A celebration of life honoring Norton Barnhill will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at Griffith Baptist Church, located at 1987 Old Salisbury Road, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, 27127.
